The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced on Tuesday that it will end the investigation of 580,000 Tesla vehicles, as the automaker initially allowed playing games on the front console. NHTSA launched an investigation into the passenger play feature in December 2021 to evaluate whether the feature could distract drivers. Shortly thereafter, Tesla agreed to no longer allow passengers to play games on the in-car screen while the vehicle is in motion. NHTSA stated that ending the investigation without seeking a recall does not indicate that there are no safety-related defects. Additionally, this does not preclude the agency from taking further action if necessary.
