Conservative lawmakers in the U.S. House are increasing pressure on Speaker McCarthy to take a hardline stance in debt limit negotiations. Texas Congressman Chip Roy wrote a letter to fellow Republicans urging them to demand McCarthy make raising the debt ceiling contingent on significant government spending cuts. He argued that the debt ceiling measure passed by the House last month is critical and should not be abandoned in pursuit of a deal. While a debt limit deal can pass the House without conservative support, angering them could put McCarthy at risk of losing his speakership. Roy has previously called the debt ceiling deadline a "manufactured crisis". McCarthy has not yet disclosed any compromise proposal he may have. In addition, some Democrats are willing to switch sides to keep McCarthy in his role as Speaker in the event of a debt limit deal.
