China has become the new engine for growth in the global automotive market, thanks to a surge in exports. In the first quarter of this year, China surpassed Japan and Germany to become the worlds largest exporter of cars for the first time. The country exported 1.069 million new vehicles in the first three months of 2021, overtaking Japan, which has been the global leader of automotive exports for a long time (with 1.047 million vehicles). Major automakers like Tesla China, SAIC Group, Chery, Geely, Great Wall, Changan, and BYD were the key contributors to Chinas automotive exports. The export of new-energy vehicles has become an essential component of China's automotive exports. By 2022, Chinas automotive exports are projected to reach 3.11 million units, a year-on-year growth of 54.4%, with new-energy vehicle exports expected to reach 679,000 units, a YoY growth of 120%. Tesla has played its role in boosting Chinas new-energy vehicle exports with a significant market share.
